Structure and function of a pressure regulator
Many beer dispensers are equipped with a so-called pressure reducer. This has the task of lowering the pressure in the beer line so that not only foam runs out of the tap.
In the following we explain exactly how a pressure reducer works and how it is constructed.
What is a pressure regulator?
The task of a pressure reducer is to keep the pressure in a line constant at the desired level. It is always used when the outlet pressure exceeds the pressure actually required.
In a beer dispensing system, for example, the pressure in the beer barrel is higher than the pressure that is required when serving beer at the tap. In addition, the pressure decreases the emptier the connected beer keg is.
The pressure reducer is used here, on the one hand, for a general reduction and, on the other hand, to compensate for fluctuations in the line pressure, so that the correct tap pressure is always guaranteed for the bar.
Pressure reducers are not only used in beer dispensing systems. In addition, they are also installed in water pipes and heating systems, for example. Their function there is essentially the same as with the beer tap.
This is how a pressure regulator is constructed
The pressure reducer connects two line sections with one another. The so-called pre-pressure in the part of the beer line that is connected to the keg is normally significantly higher.
In the pressure regulator, the beer is passed through a valve equipped with a compression spring. The higher the pressure, the more the spring is compressed.
As a result, there is more space available for the beer and it flows more slowly and with a lower pressure into the line section that leads to the tap.
So that the whole thing works as desired, it is of course important that the built-in pressure reducer is designed for the capacities of the beer dispenser. Otherwise the line pressure would either be decreased too much or too little.
Replacement of a defective pressure reducer
Even with the best dispensing system, it can happen that the pressure reducer is defective at some point and needs to be replaced. If you still have a guarantee on your device at this point in time, you can contact the manufacturer for an exchange.
If the guarantee has already expired, however, you will have to repair your dispenser yourself. To do this, first check which pressure reducer you have installed. Make sure to order a suitable model so that your beer dispenser works as usual even after the replacement.
In our shop you will find a large selection of high-quality pressure reducers that you can have conveniently and reliably delivered.
If you do not trust yourself to replace the pressure reducer, you can of course also contact a repair service in your area and they will take care of the repair
